The very term “watchmaker” can, in my case, leave some things unexplained. I must confess that I’ve never truly regarded myself as a watchmaker.
The idea of experience does not replace experience.
I use my knowledge of watch-making as a means of communication, to speak about art as I understand it. Furthermore, I disagree completely with how the various arts are generally classified.
Why is a painter more of an artist than a shoemaker? Why is a singer more of an artist than a baker? Art, according to my definition, according to my understanding, is the ability to evoke, in a perfected work, a deep and spontaneous emotion–with no need for any explanations and absent any financial considerations connected with the purchase of a work by a known artist.
