A SPATIAL PHILOSOPHY

Mechanical engineering has always been humankind’s faithful companion, for down the centuries people have sought to achieve increased complexity and sophistication. Horology has been the lucky beneficiary of this effort.

The most sophisticated, beautiful and seemingly simple of all mechanisms is still in operation before our very eyes: I mean our solar system, our universe. The mathematical laws that govern it are wildly complex, and yet it all seems so straightforward.

Herein lies the inspiration for my Spatial Watches.

A SINGULARITY.

“Art does not reproduce the visible; it makes it visible”

Paul Klee was on the mark with this flash of insight. For too long, movements remained hidden, concealed beneath a dial as if they were parts too shameful to be seen. Now their roles have been reversed: engineering, life, is the focus of attention and for aficionados can become an object of contemplation.

Gold, created by nuclear fusion in the stars, is the dream raw material for a Spatial Watch. It is omnipresent, for besides the parts, movement and case are fashioned from this stellar matter. It is by design of a whitish color, and hence discreet, for it should not be a distraction, but rather should focus attention on the essential.

PARADIGM SHIFT

With the creation of Spatial Watches a paradigm shift has occurred. It is a question of going far beyond appearances, of abandoning mere cleverness and technical artifice in order to envision a new concept of essentiality which alone can reveal the nature of things. The beauty, perfection and lightness of the whole are the products of this vision.

IN PRAISE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

By visually separating the case from the movement, we create two distinct milieux for two different art forms. If the first of these arts is horology, the second can only be engraving. White gold is the perfect material here, reflecting light as it does in a subtle, inimitable manner.

ONE CREATION, TWO CREATORS

Olivier Roux, Master Engraver, was the ideal collaborator for Vincent Calabrese in this creative process. A virtuoso if ever there was one, he knows that the path from the hand to the work passes through his heart and his imagination. The margin of error here being nil, we can feel nothing but awe when we allow our eyes to follow the lines he traces—as precise as they are sinuous and mysterious.

A UNIQUE WORK

Victor Hugo asserted that “Form is the depths that rise to the surface.” This creation is the proof of that. Yet again the poet was right: the captivating beauty of Y surpasses the creation itself. It is the incarnation of a concept, of a philosophy.

“The starry sky above me, moral law within me.”—Emmanuel Kant

The Power of a sYmbol

Of all the letters of the alphabet Y has always had its own particular influence. In philosophical circles as far back as Pythagoras it symbolized a crossroads. For others it represented the knowledge that allowed a man to surpass himself. In day-to-day usage Y is rare, and thus we wished it to make this model not just rare, but something truly unique.
